The Judicial Advisory Appointments Committee met by conference call on March 30th, 2020 and decided to extend the deadline for applications for the position of Provincial Court Judge from March 31st, 2020 to Thursday, April 30th, 2020 at 4 p.m.
The Committee recognizes that since mid-March, members of the legal profession have been preoccupied with the unprecedented impact of COVID-19 on their clients and their practice. The closure of non-essential services and the directions of the Public Health Office to remain at home have also presented difficulties for accessing many of the background checks required for the application, particularly in respect to obtaining a vulnerable sector check and a driving abstract. The Committee is aware that Criminal record checks are no longer being done by the police, in response to COVID-19, but according to the Charlottetown City Police website, can be obtained through a local company (online only) at https://www.c5id.com/. Other private companies may also provide this service. The Committee is currently exploring options in respect of the vulnerable sector check. Credit checks are available online through Equifax at www.equifax.ca or TransUnion at www.transunion.ca. Access PEI offices are currently closed to the public but requests by email may be an option for a driving abstract.
With the extension of the deadline to April 30th, 2020 at 4 p.m., those interested in the position of Provincial Court Judge are asked to submit the application itself as soon as possible, and then provide the necessary background checks as they become available.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact the Committee Chair, Judge Nancy K. Orr.
